It isn't good... it does suck. But it's the only way that many of the music labels will allow Apple to sell their music. Apple is happy to sell the music without DRM, as we've seen with iTunes Plus. So don't blame Apple, blame the music labels who require it. :-(
Dave... Yeah I know it's not entirely Apple's fault and you're right, Steve Jobs has taken a stance against DRM. Still, I guess I was a little annoyed that I was really in the mood to listen to this particular album and I hadn't yet run it through my FairTunes.

Let me guess... before your laptop was replaced, you didn't disassociate it from your iTunes account.
I'm not sure if you can do that once the machine is gone gone gone, but it is worth a try. Though that may involve a customer service call to Apple.
Brian... yep, that's exactly what happened. I've never deauthorized any of my computers that I've had for the life of my iTunes account. That would do it ;-) I actually do still have the old work laptop so will deauthorize that forthwith ;-)
Göran... no I'm not actively playing the music on five different machines. Just had five over the lifetime of my iTunes account and forgot to deauthorize old ones. My bad ;-)
Jake... I plugged in my iPod to my laptop so that I could use iTunes and therefore scrobble my songs as I was listening. It's a last.fm thing ;-)
kapgar... lol, I guess over the lifetime of my iTunes account I must have plugged my iPod into those computers to use it as the music library. But forgot to deauthorize them. Whoopsie. And hey, you can never to too many computers ;-)

On a Mac you can replace machines. Or are you already playing your music on 5 machines?
I'm confused though, couldn't you just listen to your iPod, why plug it into your laptop?

ugh.. I'd be so frustrated!
How many freakin' computers do you need?
Tori... oh it was frustrating.
