Abandoned London And Special Effects

When watching scenes of abandoned cities in the movies, I've always wondered if it was cool special effects or whether the film studios paid the city handsomely for closing off a few streets for a little bit. I should wonder no more. All you have to do is get up reasonably early on Christmas Day and you have an abandoned London. What a cool idea. I think this one is my fave.
Oh and speaking of special effects, this list of the top 50 movie special effects is really worth a look. I do think it's worth noting how much more effort they had to put in back in the early days. The approaching the death star trench scene from 1977 is still amazing even today.
Cool links. It's reasurring to know that the advertisers still leave the Picadilly Circus adverts on, or do they just switch on knowing a camera may be on them, whose shots are then seen on the web by trillions, I wonder, well, I don't, but you know what I mean.
I agree with the Starwars trench shot, and a whole load of others from that film, and those on the list.

Ha, that's such a cool idea. Hmm, maybe on Christmas Day I'll do the same thing in my local metropolis. Oh, that's right, I live in a freakin' village that's always like a ghost town 365 days a year. Hmm.
singleparentdad... I believe they do actually just switch on whenever a there's some kind of recording device pointed their way. Wouldn't want to miss out on the extremely important web photo market.
hilly... yeah it is a good idea, I'm going to try to remember to do it in Phoenix this year. Mind you. Downtown Phoenix is abandoned at the weekends so I could pretty much do it whenever I wanted ;-0
jake... still, you could always take the shots and call them abandoned ghost town. Or something. Either way I'd love to see them.
