Doh
[Moozik: The Cure - Seventeen Seconds]
Don't you just love finding out that they still make some of the things that you played with as a kid? No? Oh, well then it must just be me then. Well, regardless, I opened a tub of Play-Doh for the first time in something like 25+ years this weekend.
Of course the first thing I made was a long stringy thingy followed by round balls of, er, roundness. Oh yes, my creativity knows no bounds. Ahem. I don't know why I thought it would be any different but I was pleasantly surprised that Play-Doh smells exactly the same as I remembered it.
You played with Play-Doh as kids too right? Right?

I not only played with as a kid, I still play with it in some of the Snowy Sunday videos on my blog.
It's kind of funny going to the store, as a 45 year old guy, and buying $10 worth of Play-Doh. I've not gotten looks (people probably think it's for a child), but It feels fun to me still.
So just to make sure I'm reading you correctly, this was NOT a 25 year old tub of Play-Doh... ;-)
I love Playdoh! I bought so much of it for my nephew for Christmas but really... I wanted to play with it too.
I will confess to being excited about the prospect of The Boy molding his little heart out with the oddly colour crap. My joy ended when it got embedded in the carpet, where it remains many years later.
Now I have a Playdoh ban in place. I am such a bad parent.
I bet you had the hairdressers shop, didn't you?
When I first bought some, second time round, the smell was once again intoxicating. It is brilliant stuff, and I've tried several times, unsuccessfully, to make, and bake, some myself.
But you still can't beat the original.
That smell - the last time I opened a container of it as an adult (too many years ago now), that smell brought a flash flood of ... well, not exactly specific memories, but it was definitely an exciting blast from the past. I loved playing with it. I worked for my friend at a candle shop for a while, and the stuff we used to hold wicks in place as the wax was setting made excellent molding clay, and I ended up sculpting stuff out of it for hours.
marty... yes, you've made some amazing creations in your Snowy Sunday videos. (Snickers), yes you're right, it wasn't a 25 year old tub of Play-Doh ;-)
sizzle... oh it's the best stuff. Next time you're with your nephew just encourage a Play-Doh play session and you'll be sorted.
nat... excellent slogan, I think Play-Doh should hire you. "Play-Doh, mold your little heart out with oddly coloured crap".
spd... to be honest, I don't remember what actual play sets I had. The only one that vaguely rings a bell is some kind of contraption that you squish the Play-Doh into, pull a handle down, and shapes come out of it. Or something.
catherine... yeah, the smell brought back so many memories.
I take it you made long sausages too?
I loved Play-Doh as a kid. But I would love even more to find me some old school Shrinky Dinks!
jase... oh of course.
kapgar... not entirely sure what Shrinky Dinks are. Perhaps across the pond we called them/it something different. Going to find out now...
OMG I love Playdoh! My kids are a bit old for it now but I go crazy for it when I'm playing with the Lil Nephews. Mmmmm that smell!
My daughter has a PD operation set. You fill the man's tummy with PD mold sausages, butterflies, organs then cover with a layer of PD skin. Then mark out where you're going to cut and disemboweling the poor chap. She is either going to be a surgeon or a serial killer.
penelope... to be honest, I'm now thinking I liked the smell more than the shape making. Well, that could also be the fact that I'm crap at shape making of course ;-)
simon... ha yes (giggling) 'serial killer preparation set' ages 5+.
Shrinky Dinks were those thingys you cooked in the oven and they shrunk, right?
Or maybe I am just losing it....
jase... you're absolutely right mate. A quick bit of the google and bob's your uncle ;-)
