[Moozik: Depeche Mode - Peace]
• I'm taking the fact that my ears ring when I get out of my car as a sign that I could possibly be listening to music way too loudly again. Still, who doesn't love to rock out while driving? Safer than texting right? I really hope that they come up with some kind of cure for deafness in the next 10 years or so.
• Why do some people insist on continuing their phone conversations in the public toilets? As classy as that may be, please don't. I really don't want to hear you ask your wife to water the plants and argue about how much beer you drank the night before while I'm, er, well you know.
• "I'm leaving anger in the past with all the shadows that it cast." Peace by Depeche Mode is, by far, the best track on Sounds of the Universe. So far anyway. Of my most listened to tracks of the past 3 months, Sounds of the Universe now has 3 in the top ten.
• Ok, so this is related. Go watch Marty's remake of Depeche Mode's Wrong video. Genius I tell you.
• Now that the move is all done with, this means no more commuting on the freeway. Woohoo. Here in the US when your commute does not involve a freeway they say you're taking the "surface streets". Don't ask me why, I just live here.
I listen to music too loud in the car too! It's no fun on "quiet"!
Ummm WTF are "surface streets"??
Regular streets are called 'surface streets' to differentiate them from the Phoenix descent-into-hell freeways.
I never really thought about the term until now, but if you think about how the freeways are constructed in town, it makes sense. Until you reach the outskirts of the city, the major freeways (AZ-51, US-60, I-10, I-17, Loop 101, Loop 202) don't stay level with the surrounding land much at all.
Think about how AZ-51 runs:
below Greenway
above Thunderbird
below Cactus
below 32nd
above Northern
below Glendale
below Bethany Home
below Camelback
above Indian School
above Thomas
above McDowell
Okay, it's after midnight and I am rambling about freeways. Clearly, I need some sleep.
I'm still trying to get used to the new DM album. I'm starting to like the music, but I don't "love" any of the tracks yet. My most played song from "Sounds of the Universe" is "Miles Away" (after "Wrong" which had a head-start).
I need to sit and have a good listen to the new DM album, maybe on my run home tonight...
And there is nothing better than loud music in the car. The Boy asks me to turn it down.
penelope... surface streets are what they call regular streets. It was one of those things that made no sense to me when I first moved here. I also said "wtf are surface streets?".
brian... dunno if you're right, but that's probably the best stab at an explanation I've read. Nice one ;-)
dave... the album is a total grower. For the first couple of listens I was less than impressed. Then after a while a lot of the songs started to sink in a little. I actually now think it's quite a solid album. They're never going to make a Black Celebration or Violator again but this is, well, passable ;-)
nat... yes sitting down, or running would be perfect. I've found that listening via headphones really helps for this album.
Peace is a good track on SOTU as is In Sympathy and Come Back. Come Back is one of the songs Dave wrote isn't it?
I listened to it on that pre-release site at least 10 times before it was officially released a week later. By far, my favorite track has been "In Sympathy" The layout of the sounds, the vocals and how it plays from start to finish grabs me each and every time. However, I do find that the lyrics from "Peace" are easier to remember after I've listened to the entire album.
And thank you for the linkage to my Leakage. The big DM fan that I am, I had to find a way to remake that video a la scooter.
jake... Hole To Feed, Come Back, and Miles Away / The Truth Is are the songs that Dave wrote. Well technically he didn't write them himself he wrote them with Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott.
marty... oh I love In Sympathy as well. No problem about the link. I love all your videos but you did an absolutely outstanding job with this one mate.
Ahh, thanks. I didn't realize Dave wasn't the sole songwriter on the songs he "wrote" ;-)
So right. Headphones are the way to go for this album. Over my stereo I didn't fully appreciate what I was hearing. Headphones really brought the sound out. I know you think that BC and Violator are their finest hour. But you also know my views on MFTM ;-)
jake... yeah he writes as a team.
rob... Black Celebration and Violator *are* their finest hour mate. No question ;-)
