iPod Death
[Moozik: Skinny Puppy - First Aid]
Well, it really hasn't been a good few days for me and Apple hardware. After the iPhone suckery from the weekend, I come home from work yesterday to find my iPod in the full throws of giving up the ghost.
It's stuck in perpetual boot-up hell. Seems to get no further than the Apple symbol, attempts to re-boot itself, and gets stuck again. Rinse, repeat. The hard disk is making an awful click of death sound. Mind you, it's had some serious use so I can't really complain. I think it's my third iPod and I've used it almost every day in the three years I've had it.
I didn't realize how much I've come to depend on it on my daily commute and felt lost without it. Good lord regular terrestrial radio sucks doesn't it? Even NPR was unappealing.
This is one gadget that I cannot be without for very long that's for sure.

My iPod died six months into it's young life. I tried to get it fixed under warranty (to not have to buy Apple Care) but guess what? The warranty begins the day they ship the iPod. Not when you actually purchase it. So my iPod was out of warranty already and Apple refuses to service it unless I pay an outrageous amount of money (and buy Apple Care). So I feel ya. My iPod sits in the box Apple sent it back in forever dead.
Even still, I would expect your iPod to last a lot longer than 3 years. You need to ignore the guarantee and check out your consumer rights. The act here, the one that includes fit for purpose, has a mandatory manufacturer obligation of six years, regardless of 'warranty' offered.
I know that pain. I'm so sorry.
As for me, I realize just how important my iPod is to my daily routine. I listen to it not just on my commute, but all day long at work as well. I'd be lost without it.
george... the warranty begins when they ship it? That's really fucked up. I am toying with the idea of buying the Apple Care though. Not for my iPod, but for my Mac. With my recent luck with Apple hardware, I really don't want to have to pay through the arse for repairs to my 10 month old MacBook Pro. But Apple Care is $349. Hmm, what to do...
spd... there's nothing here in the US like that unfortunately. Once your warranty is up, you're pretty much buggered unless you cough up for the extra Apple Care bollocks.
kapgar... same here for me mate - I also listen to it at work. The only thing that kept me sane yesterday was listening via the last.fm scrobbler to my 'fave tracks' radio station. Until I get a new iPod, I guess that's what I'll be doing for a while ;-)
Wow, that sucks. You're not having much luck are you? So, are you going to get one of the new iPods or suffer without one? I wouldn't know what to do without mine.
Ouch, that´s a huge suckathon right there! A life without iPod just isn´t possible :(
jake... not much luck with gadgets in the past few weeks. First my camera auto-focus lock went. Then the iPhone, now my iPod. They say bad things come in threes so I'm hoping I'm all done now ;-)
göran... I know that all too well sir.
We had such issues with our first generation iPods that we always bought Apple Care for them. And every time we sent one in, I'd give the Man puppy dog eyes and he lent me his... (good man that.)
I'm not going anywhere without my iPod.
nat... I'm going to try an experiment and try to live without my iPod. Now, that does mean I will be taking my laptop into the office so I can listen to music as I work. So that just means I have to rely on the radio for the commute. I'll see how long I can last ;-)
As a long time iPod owner and fellow Apple fan, that sucks having the iPod go belly up.
And terrestrial radio does suck, says the guy with both an iPod and Sirius satellite radio.
Sounds like it may be time to upgrade to one of the new 160gb classics.
marty... yep, it's the first one I've owned that has actually broken. The others just became full as my library grew. I'm now on day three of terrestrial radio and it completely blows. And it seems that in my commute window, NPR has had exactly nothing on that I care about ;-)
If there's one gadget I wouldn't want to be without, it's my iPod (3rd Generation and still as good as the day I bought it). I can imagine your pain Kevin.
jonathan... yes, it is really painful after having used it daily for so many years ;-)
