Movies, Flyovers, And Being Brown

Movie Of The Year

Movie Of The Year

We went to see Inception at the weekend. So very very good. I don't remember the last time I had that sitting on the edge of my seat feeling when watching a movie. As it finished everyone around us let out a little sigh, and there was clapping. Been a while since I've been in a cinema when people clapped at the end. I know some people say it wasn't that good. But what do they know? Go watch it forthwith. 10/10

Living In A Flyover State

As tour schedules for bands come out I often get excited especially if it's a band I haven't seen before. Unfortunately because of where I live, just because a band is on tour, doesn't mean I'll get to see them. For Arizona is one of those pesky flyover states that bands like to avoid. If you live in LA or New York you're golden. Arizona is all a bit hit & miss. Take Interpol for example. Their tour schedule came out today. Notice anything missing? Phoenix maybe? Grrr.

Being Brown

SB 1070 Protest at The Capitol Building

Unless otherwise shutdown by federal judge, SB1070 goes into effect at midnight tonight. If it does, it will be a very very sad day for Arizona indeed. Not our finest hour.

Update: parts of SB1070 have indeed been blocked.

I am on my way to watch Inception right now - as you commanded!

That SB1070 is very scary. Much the same over here though I'm afraid! I think it was the Fun Loving Criminals that said the patriot act was destroying the American people's liberty (and that must have been almost 10 years ago now!).

When I saw Inception, everyone gasped at the end. I thought it was entertaining, but found a few holes, like I do in every other movie. The acting and filming was great though!

I was one of those people who was pretty MEH on Inception. Glad, though, you thought it was good.

You know, I've heard some artists publicly state that they're skipping Arizona in protest of SB 1070. As if you weren't already a flyover state ... it might just get worse if this thing really becomes law. Sigh.

Per the news this morning, The federal judge in the case has blocked the controversial parts of SB1070. This is good for now while the case is ongoing.

The guy that pisses me off the most is Joe Arpaio, the sheriff for Maricopa County. He arrogance as a official of the law makes me worry, since he'll be ignoring whatever to "do his job"

There was a good amount of clapping at the end of Toy Story 3 when I saw it. I really need to go see Inception.

spencer, let me know what you thought about Inception mate. SB1070 is very scary.

kilax, we also found a couple of teeny plot holes but nothing that detracted from the overall impression of the movie. Finding plot holes can be awfully fun though.

nilsa, yeah I'd read about the organized boycott of Arizona by various bands. I wonder if Interpol are one of those bands? And you're right, it's certainly not going to help the flyover factor.

marty, excellent news about the blockage of certain provisions of SB1070. Oh but don't even get me started on Joe Arpaio. A douchebag of momentous proportions. Arsehole doesn't seem to quite cover it.

I was reading the immigration news and wondered if you'd heard about the judge putting the block on portions of SB1070. And I see you've updated your post and you do know. I would imagine you're happy? This will end up at the Supreme Court doncha thing?

That good, huh? The last movie I was in that people clapped for was Toy Story 3. Before that? Passion of the Christ. Ironic considering the general loathing of Mel Gibson now.

Glad that immigrant law was shot down.

That's good because I don't think my passport will fit in my running shorts.

jake, it has to go to the 9th Circuit Court in California first (well, if Brewer decides to appeal) but then after that, yes, the Supreme Court. Will be interesting to see what happens.

kapgar, oddly no one clapped when we saw Toy Story 3 but it was certainly worthy of it. Now that I've had time to digest that movie I think it's certainly up there in Pixar's top 5. Maybe top 3.

nat, ah but I really don't think you're the "target demographic" for SB1070.
