That Fourth Of July Thing

For a Brit living in America, Independence Day has always felt a little odd for me. Sure I go with the flow and enjoy beer and hot dogs along with the next, er, beer and hot dog enthusiast. Just a little peculiar to celebrate that my country lost a war.

Woohoo, we got our arses kicked, good job colonists, now pass me another beer won't you old chap.

But that was all such a long time ago. Water under the bridge, and in the spirit of Anglo-American relations I say congratulations on beating us fair and square, we were a bit crap in that war anyway. We got a lot better after that.

So, dear Americans, whatever you find yourself up to on this holiday weekend, enjoy yourselves and I'll have a beer for you.

You should just go neutral and tell everyone Happy Canada Day. =)

One year I went to an Independence Day cookout with friends and wore my Union Jack T-shirt. Nobody gave it a second glance. In all honesty I think the holiday has evolved past our independence from Britain and is just an excuse to get drunk and eat hotdogs.

As well it should be. :-)

That isn't your house is it? It looks so comfy cozy and non-Arizony.

nilsa ha, yes of course eh?

dave2 indeed, any excuse for drinking is good in my book. Oh, and while I don't have a union jack t-shirt, I do have one tattooed on my calf so I'll be sporting that, er, just like I do every day ;-)

hhc, no, not our house. But it is certainly Arizony mate, it's off 7th St and Osborn ;-)

Well, you're here and you're partly American so a Happy Independence from your own ancestors day!

For me, it's not about getting drunk and whatnot. However, I do love me some hot dogs. I'm in this holiday for fireworks, which still strike me as being celebratory in nature. So I guess, at least to some degree, the true meaning of the holiday remains intact. Oh am I blowing smoke up my own ass?

kapgar, oh yes, and I love me some fireworks.

I celebrated my 4th in Canada. There were no fireworks to be seen from where I was sitting but I did manage a few bottles of beer and some pizza (so it was still good.)

delmer, ha - I find beer and pizza makes any day a good one.
