Getting Links From Your Tweets

| Comments (9)

Warning: geek entry, you'll want to bail now if you don't care about this kind of thing

I knew I'd posted a tweet with a link in it but for the life of me I couldn't remember what it was or when I'd even posted it. Manually searching through my timeline was a monumental pain in the arse and I gave up in disgust. There had to be a better way.

So I wrote one. tweetlinkr is a very simple Perl program that retrieves your Twitter timeline, examines each tweet for the presence of a link, and prints any that are found to screen.

And while I did find what I was looking for, I really didn't care anymore as I was far more entertained writing code to talk to the Twitter API. Which, I might add, is incredibly easy thanks to the heroic effort put into the Net::Twitter Perl module.

When I get around to it I think it might be cool to store all the links I've posted to Twitter in some kind of 'these must be interesting because I posted them to Twitter' kind of storage/viewing thingy. Another project for another day.

I'm not sure these geek posts really belong here. But I don't really know where else to put them. So here they'll go. For now.

The Letter C

I was drinking some rather nice afternoon coffee when my mind began to focus on chocolate.

ScreenShot047.jpgYou know, I think I could live entirely on things beginning with the better c.

Crackers, coca-cola, chocolate, chips, cake, cookies, coffee, cheese, crisps, chicken, crepes, cereal, cheeseburger.

Now, if only Guinness was spelled Cuinness I'd be all set really.

• Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone. Or as @kapgar retweeted earlier...

...which made me giggle. So, as you do, I'll be having a beer for you all tonight to celebrate. You're welcome.

• Trent Reznor's new project, How To Destroy Angels posted their first track online yesterday: A Drowning. I love it, and I think you will to. Either that or you won't but that's what you get for listening to me ;-)

Date Night one word movie review: disappointing.

• Cinema we watched movie in one word popcorn review: AWESOME.

• Our local NBA Basketball team, Phoenix Suns, are going to wear their 'Los Suns' jerseys tonight to protest Arizona's immigration law. Which is cool.

• The user interface for dropbox is really really nice. If you need to share files with anyone, I heartily recommend it. Free accounts max out at 2GB but it's perfect for sharing photos with family.

Twitter & Blogging

[Moozik: Underworld - Moaner]

Recently I've noticed that I don't post here anywhere near as often as I used to and wasn't really sure what to put my blogger's block down to. Well, until yesterday that is. Dan wrote an interesting post that linked to something Simon wrote about the impact Twitter has on your blogging. Go read both, I'll wait.

There are some good points in there. Maybe Twitter does indeed eat away at those creative flashes of inspiration you have throughout the day. For me personally, I'm finding it so much easier to post random thoughts to Twitter than compose a lengthy blog post. I wonder if that will continue and for how long?
