Your Literary Idols

Whenever I see one of these old timey typewriters I can't help but wonder what it was used for. A novel, a newspaper scandal, TPS reports.

I spend my life behind a keyboard and consider myself a proficient typist but the last time I tried to type on a typewriter I was completely crap at it. Just terrible. Totally different skill involved.

Imagine how lost we'd be if we had to go back to these. No backspace, having to remember how to actually spell words. The horror.

In middle school, we had state-of-the-art Apple IIgs's in our labs. Then, in high school, I took keyboarding and had to revert and learn on an actual typewriter. Haven't touched one since.

Was it an old school smash the keys one or an electric one? Don't know how anyone managed to type on the smash the keys ones ;-)

  2. Jake says:

I used a typewriter once years ago and was amazed at how hard you had to smash the keys. Smashing the keys is the term right?

I took a typing class in high school where we used IBM Selectric typewriters. At home, I had a manual typewriter. I wouldn't mind owning a working vintage model someday.
