I've got another friend who swears by it but he's also a devotee of hard sci-fi. Too intense for me.

I'm also a bit of a hard sci-fi guy, and four episodes in I'm intrigued where this is all going.

I hope you like it more than I did. I'm guessing if you didn't read the book you'd have a better shot at it.

    • kevin says:

Yeah I've gone into this cold not knowing anything about it. As I've gathered from the internets, those who have read the books are less than forgiving about the show. I'm four episodes in and intrigued by the story.

I did read the first book of the series, but still greatly enjoyed the Netflix series. To be honest, I don't know how you would even begin to adapt the book as it was written without making a very flat and very dry TV series. The book has very long sections in the video game, and I'm kind of glad that these were more limited in the series.

So yes, they've made some enormous changes, but it still feels very true to the overarching story. And I like the ambition of it.

It also feels like it moves along at a fair clip to me.

For what it's worth, Amazon has the Chinese language version of this series available. I've only watched a tiny bit of that, and it's different again. It also feels a bit cheap – not in the VFX sense – but the acting and script. Oh, and it's *30* parts!

    • kevin says:

Yeah I'm absolutely intrigued by the story after going in knowing nothing. Oh I didn't even realize there *was* a Chinese version. After I've watched the last few remaining Netflix episodes I'll go give that a watch. Thanks mate.
