That Racist Uncle

They say don't ever meet your heros and while Morrissey was far from that, his words and his voice featured heavily on the soundtrack of my youth. I had posters and t-shirts of The Smiths and their albums were always on constant rotation.

So it's all a bit disappointing isn't it when you find out that those you once held in high regard have, quite frankly, disappeared up their own asshole.

From Stereogum.

And as far as racism goes, the modern Loony Left seem to forget that Hitler was Left wing! But of course, we are all called racist now, and the word is actually meaningless. It's just a way of changing the subject. When someone calls you racist, what they are saying is "Hmm, you actually have a point, and I don't know how to answer it, so perhaps if I distract you by calling you a bigot we'll both forget how enlightened your comment was."

(tip of the hat to my old mucker @jaseyhall for the racist uncle reference)

He's always been a bit nationalist and flirted around racism. Lately he's gone a little further off the rails.

I never would've pegged him as a right winger. But what the heck do I know about him?

I don't _think_ there's much on the early Smiths albums to indicate that he was. Some of the interviews, visuals, and songs from his solo career have raised a couple of eyebrows over the years. But lately he's gone slightly more off the deep end.

I tried to understand him when he used to change the menu at venues he played at, removing all meat options (not everyone that attends his concerts are vegan or feel forced to eat vegan-only options) mostly due to the fact that he has always practiced the vegan diet for himself ("Meat Is Murder" comes to mind). But this latest rant puts him the same place James Woods and other extreme right-leaning celebrities are in with their public words. To borrow a phrase from some on the ultra right, he needs to stick to just making music.

    • kevin says:

Oh yeah, I totally respect his vegan beliefs. The fact that he was kinda shoving them down everyone else's throat wasn't necessarily that cool. But whatever, I can deal with that in a "oh that's Morrissey for you" kinda way. But lately I can't in any way reconcile what he says with the image I had of him in my youth. Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth all round really. Shame.
