Apple Vision Pro

It's incredibly early in the story of the Apple Vision Pro. My take on it based on what I've read so far, the current revision doesn't have a compelling reason for owning it…yet. It seems more of a developer preview device with the unfortunate name of "pro" attached to it. With an equally unfortunate $3k+ price tag.

Like other sci-fi enthusiasts I look forward to the day where we have virtual screens that just appear in front of us. And while you could argue this is what the Vision Pro affords, the awkward bulky ski goggle setup isn't what I had in mind.

Dan Sinker has a few pics from today's hands-on and I can't really disagree here.

There seems to be no way to wear an Apple Vision Pro and not look like a total herb.

While true, I don't think today is a fair look at where this tech will be five to ten years down the road. Everything has to start somewhere. Apple don't want the kooky ski goggles any more than I do. They'll iterate over the design and perhaps years from now there will be a reason to own one. At an affordable price point.

Or not, and this was all an expensive solution in search of a problem 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh man, those photos. No matter how cool the technology might be this looks super dorky. The first time I see someone on a plane wearing one of these I'm going to smirk.

I think the Occulus Style of VR will be a thing until, as you said above, where virtual screens just appear in front of us.

FWIW, it's cool tech, but not for me anytime soon.

On Mastodon I see those with apparent infinite disposable income proud of their pre-orders and I just think it's utterly bananas. Christina Warren has a sane take.

No, I did not pre-order a Vision Pro. It's $3899 for the 1TB option, $500 for Apple Care+, then there is 10% tax. So if I don't get any accessories like a case or battery clip, I'm at $4848 just for the headset. And I haven't even tried it yet. No thank you. I might have FOMO, but I'm not into throwing that much money towards the unknown.

The "total herb" claim isn't fair. Anybody wearing any sort of AR/VR goggles looks like a douche. There's no way around it.

That I grant you. AR/VR ski goggles aren't at all flattering. I'm kinda cringing inside when I read things like "can't wait to try these on a plane".

Which I parse as "can't wait to look like a raging douche canoe in front of a bunch of people".
